The fate of historic Barrio Duranguito has become one of the most contentious issues in El Paso in recent history. In Oct. 2016 the City Council voted to demolish the neighborhood in order to place a sports arena there. Residents of the barrio and community organizers quickly responded to protect the community, turning in two petitions to the City Council, participating in a court hearing in Austin, developing a community-based development plan, and camping out in Duranguito to stop the demolition of buildings. In Austin, the Court has ruled against the City, but the issue is not yet settled. Four speakers will discuss their involvement in protecting Duranguito.
